Zig-N-Zag

Check out those screenshots. Not very impressive, eh? Well, two hours ago those strings were completely indecipherable, now they’re not. What can I say, I’m good like that, yo.

The moral of the story: if you’re going to do any asm programming, take the time to completely understand how the game works and what exactly you want to do before you start hacking it to pieces. Anyway, this hopefully is the last bug to be fixed. (How many times have I said that before?) With any luck, the next update will be informing you guys about the release. I’ll probably make that one both here on the blog and on the site.

In other news, I’ve got one more day of class and then I get a week off for Thanksgiving. I plan on reading a book (or two) and putting in a few hours on SEKAS or Spidey, because I really I want to get those two finished up and released before this year’s up. Of course, I said that last year too and we all know how well that worked out…

I’m the first to comment on this one, HAH!

Seriously, though, this is completely awesome news.

    That’s really weird. You’re comment isn’t being counted. O_o

EDIT: And right after I post this and check the front page, it shows 2 Comments instead of 0 Comments. Weird.

    WordPress sux, lol

What’s the main holdup on Spider-Man: Lethal Foes, anyway? Just curious.

Basically what I’m going to do is rip the VWF font out of Comix Zone (Genesis) and put it into Spidey. Thing is, Comix Zone’s font is (as best I can remember) compressed and I haven’t had a chance to really focus on decompressing it. I can’t recall it being a terribly complex routine though.

After that, I need to throw together a VWF for Spidey that’s compatible with the new font. That shouldn’t be too much trouble either. The main problem is that it’s been so long since I’ve looked at the game seriously that it’s gonna take me a bit of time to get reacquainted with its inner workings.

It could be finished in a couple days IF I were willing to sacrifice the overall quality of the patch and stick a random 8×8 font in there. But I’ve yet to find a decent fixed width 8×8 comics-style font. So until I do, I refuse to go the fixed width route.

Here’s an example of a really crappy 8×8 font (the built-in English font):

…And I had forgotten that the script still needs some heavy duty editing.

Perhaps a quick and dirty hack for now, releasing it as version .90 might be a solution.

  6. twilighttranslations Says:

True, that is a solution, but I’m not a big fan of releasing almost-but-not-quite-complete translations. ;)

I have some good news, though. After I made that last post, I cracked open Comix Zone and I’m slowly figuring the VWF routine out. It’s pretty interesting stuff that’s really gonna help me when I get back around to finishing Bare Knuckle 3’s VWF.

  7. I.S.T. Says:

    :D Niiiice.

I should mention that by quick and dirty hack I was referring to the font work only, not the translations. >.> But yeah, i completely understand the “Release the 100% complete version” point of view.

You know eventually there’s going to be a public BBoard(it hasn’t gone public yet) where a few 68K experts will reside. If you ever have any problems with Bare Knuckle’s VWF, it might be a good idea to drop by and things might just go quicker.

I got the font ripped out of Comix Zone earlier and stuck it in Spidey as a fixed width font for a test:

Note: I chose those particular letters because they’re not wider than 8 pixels and I haven’t added the VWF yet. I’m mainly trying to see how the font itself looks in-game. Any thoughts?

  10. Elf Says:

I like the CZ font, it evokes the look of comic book hand lettering much better than the game’s internal font. I made title screens for your earlier DBZ translations. If you need a beta tester for SM:LF, please let me know.

  11. twilighttranslations Says:

Talk about a blast from the past. Long time no see, Elf. Thanks again for those title screens. I still have your work for DBZ2 whenever I feel like getting back to it. DBZ3 and Gaiden really burned me out on NES ASM hacking. The SNES and Genesis with their relative abundance of space have spoiled me. >_>

Pennywise, let me know when that board goes public. I’m very, very interested in checking it out. :)

In other news, today was a good day. I managed to get the entire font inserted into Spidey and I’ve started laying the groundwork for the VWF. Honestly, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be as difficult to do as I initially thought.

Once the VWF’s up and running, I’ll focus on getting an editor on board to go over the script and give it that early-mid 90’s comic book feel. One person offered to edit the script back in May, but I’m not sure if they’re still on board or not. If he can’t do it, I’ll post a sample of the raw English script and let interested people take a whack at editing it.

Good work you got there with Live a Live!.The idea to make a blog is nice, though it’s still in his default theme and needs some makeup :P.It’s nice to see that the updates in LAL is going forward steadly, keep up the good work!

  13. twilighttranslations Says:

I kind of like the default theme, though. Plus, if you couldn’t tell by looking at the main site, I suck at graphics design. There’s a reason why I have a simple black text on white background design and it ain’t because it’s pretty. :P

In other news, I have finals every day next week, but after that I’ve got until the first or second week of January to work on stuff. Hurrah! It’s been well over a year now since our last release and that does not sit well with me at all.
